This course is offered to Junior and Senior music students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Desert Mountain High School. This course fulfills a Group 6 class requirement for the IB Diploma Program. Elements of music history, theory, performance, composition, and global awareness are covered. Students enrolled in IB Music SL must also enroll in either Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra, or Choir.

Concert Orchestra is an intermediate string orchestra course available to all students wishing to play. Prior experience with an instrument is highly recommended.

 

Jazz Ensemble

This intermediate course is for students wishing to study jazz. Mastery of one’s instrument is a prerequisite. All students are eligible to audition, including incoming Freshmen. This course covers:

  • Big Band Performance

  • Combo Performance

  • Improvisation

  • Jazz Harmony

  • Jazz Scale Studies

  • Jazz History as it Relates to World History

  • Analytical Listening

  • Transcribing

 

Marching Band

This course is for students interested in competitive marching arts. The Marching Band consists of winds, brass, percussion, and Color Guard. Attendance is required at Saturday competitions, in addition to home football game halftime performances, parades, and more. Students get opportunities to hold leadership positions within this group and support their peers. Practices are Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3-6 p.m.

This course supplements percussion participation in Wind band courses and Marching Band. Percussion students sign up for this course when participating in Marching Band. The Percussion Ensemble covers units on snare drums, keyboards, timpani, and accessories. This course meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
